Featuring new architecture, the Core Series SSD V2 will be available in up to a massive 250GB capacity and delivers enhanced speeds of up to 170 MB/s read and 98 MB/s write speeds with an improved seek time of less than 0.2-0.3ms, making the Core V2 significantly faster when it comes to both Read/Write and seek-time performance. The addition of a mini-USB port also makes it possible for customers in the field to update the Core V2’s firmware should new versions become available, to further enhance compatibility or performance with future platforms.

The OCZ Core Series V2 delivers additional performance and reliability of the latest SSDs at a 50% less price per gigabyte than other high speed offerings currently on the market. The Core Series is ideal for an energy-efficient mobile or a RAID configured desktop to provide blazing speeds and advanced access and seek times. Because SSD drives feature no moving parts, the Core Series V2 will keep your laptop or desktop environment cool and quiet and provide a durable alternative and superior shock resistance. With even greater capacities up to 250GB, Core Series V2 now offers sufficient storage for large media files.

Designed for ultimate reliability, Core V2 SSDs have an excellent 1.5 million hour mean time before failure (MTBF) ensuring peace of mind over the long term. All Core Series SSD drives come backed a two year warranty and OCZ’s legendary service and support.

Good little product

Good quality feel to it. Would have been nice if it had come with disk screws though.

Haven't really done major back to back tests with it, but ran a few simple, non-scientific speed comparisons on my OSX set up compared to the std 250Gb HDD that came with my Macbook.

Basically the machine starts up, shuts down and opens apps broadly twice as quickly as with the std HDD. These are timings are backed up by the machine feeling quicker in general use.

Didn't get chance to test battery life comparisons. It's definitely lighter than than a std HDD, but in the overall context of a 2kg laptop it doesn't make that much difference. I've never had a normal laptop HDD fail, so not sure if it's any more reliable, but logic dictates it should be. Oh, and the machine's quieter with it (no whirring).

Is it worth the outlay? I'm more than happy with it, and it's 75% of the price of Apple's own optional SSD and quicker. But YMMV. Definitely the future of onboard storage I think and will only get cheaper and better.

A device of many extremes.

This would appear to be a device of many extremes. For one thing it is blazingly fast when it comes to retrieving data from it – irrespectively of the size and number of files. This is exceptionally well "balanced" with its mediocre (at best) or catastrophic (at worst) write performance, especially when it comes to writing numerous small (64kb or smaller) files. The absence of any input cache on the device makes for a truly horrific experience when the disk is used as the main OS partition leading to relatively frequent "freezes" because the disk cannot keep up with its own queue and since there is no cache the whole system has to wait for the disk to "catch up".

I would not recommend this device as an OS disk - caching write operations largely offset and inhibit the only good thing the device can do - read fast. If not used for data-retrieval only (which is the only role where it truly excels) then money is largely wasted buying it.

OCZ Core V2: The fastest disk
October 2nd 2008 Verified user
Faster than any other I've proved. For example: You can open as many Internet Explorer windows as you want faster than saying "other! other! other!..." Maybe writing into the disk is the only thing that could be better, but usually we read more than write.
My Windows Xp Sp3 full of programs and antivirus starts completelly in eleven seconds.
Obviously, this technology is the future of the standard storage, but the price...
Buy one of these if you can afford it. Also if you feel your hand and your mind go slower because of your computer.
With OCZ Core V2 solid disks, your mind and your computer goes at the same time.
